Ag is a beautiful boy, full of energy and excitement. However, this excess energy often was released by him contorting his body in awkward positions in his chair. His feet never touched the floor but were usually curled under him as he practically sprawled on his desk. In fact, after his adorable smile, this horrible seating habit was the first thing I noticed about Ag.
After two weeks of reprimanding Ag for his chair gymnastics, I had had enough. I decided that I needed to think outside the box if I was going to go get this child to sit properly. It hit me one day as I alternatively watched Ms. Albright teach and Ag do wheelies in his chair. I decided that I needed to make it impossible for Ag to sit improperly. I jumped up from my chair and grab a pile of dictionaries. I instructed Ag to stand up and plopped the three dictionaries on his chair. Gesturing firmly, I told him that I expected him to sit on the dictionaries while in my class. With an enormous grin on his dimpled face, he sat on his new throne, truly as proud as a king.
I am happy to report that Ag and I are both happy with our arrangement. Even during those times when he unconsciously tries to pull his legs up, he can’t because the dictionaries are in the way. I feel that he has been more focused with this new arrangement which was my primary concern. As for Ag, he is happy to have the distinction of the being the ‘tallest’ kid in the class.
