My Home:
I now live in school housing in Kyle--located about 200 meters from the school. I have an apartment to myself which is located in a six-plex. There are a handful of other TFA corps members also placed here. Because all my teammates are either married or living with someone, I am gonna on the outskirts of the TFA social life, which doesn't bother me much. One of my favorite things about my apartment is the book space--there are so many shelves. I have my books (over 300 of them) organized by genre. Please come by and see! I also have a guest room so those of you who are interested in stopping by for a vacation, shoot me a line.
My School
I have since discovered that I am teaching 3rd Grade Reading, Writing and Social Studies this year at Little Wound Elementary (LWE). The school is pretty nice, thanks to government funding. There are two principals at the elementary--K-2 and 3-5. Both of them are wonderful though they have vary different personalities. They are also two of the few people who can speak fluent Lakota--a real treasure for me! TM is my principal. She is very no-nonsense and blunt, qualities which generally wound my non-confrontational personality. However, I have come to love and respect her already and I am truly honored to work with her. It is obvious that she is an extremely intelligent woman and I believe that we shall get along well as long as I am not too sensitive or hair-brained (as she called me the other day).
Today and tomorrow are work days in our school as we are cleaning our class rooms. I am in room 170 so if you would specifically like to pray for our class, that would be wonderful. I began to paint it today and I appreciate the improvement. It is a rather large room and I think that it will serve our needs very well.
In terms of technology, there are four computers in our class--each loaded with viruses and password protected. I would appreciate if you would pray that I would get the passwords quickly and that they become functional soon. I also checked out and LCD projector for the year to use for videoconferencing.
Our theme for this year is going to be "Agents of Change." My goal is to help my children to know and believe that they have the power to bring about positive change in their community, nation and world. We are going to be studying other cultures and talking about issues of social justice--both here and abroad. I want them to be the change that they want to see in this world.
