Investment

One great thing about TFA is they have this rubric which they use to evaluate you. It can be disheartening when you get low marks, but it is so helpful in identifying ways that you can improve so that your students can improve.

One area that I knew I was struggling in was investing my students in a clear academic goal. This was in part because the children were not able to see how they were progressing academically. Therefore, I decided to create a tracking system. This is what it looks like:

Our school mascot is the Firefighters so I am trying to play off that theme. The ranking system is based on their scores. If all of their scores are above 90, they are Chief, 80-89-Captain, 70-79-Lieutenant, below 70 is Firefighter status. The children can also earn stars. They have a 5 star rating if they have turned in all assignments, 3 star rating if they have turned in all but one assignment and 1 star rating if they have not turned in two or more assignments.

If any child is unhappy with a score below 90, he or she can retake an altered form of that assessment. In this way, my babies will be challenged to strive for higher scores which will in turn result in mastery of the materials.

I know that there are only a few short days of class left, but I thought it was worth the try. Please pray that my class is miraculously motivated!
