I Live!!

By God's grace alone, I made it through my first week. Of course, it was only three days, but it was a feat nonetheless.

I am overjoyed to report that I absolutely love my babies. I have sixteen and my heart nearly explodes with love for them. Willful disobedience has been a non-issue thus far. Sometimes they are a bit chatty but for the most part, they are doing so beautifully well. I am like a proud mother. There is no doubt we have the best line in the school. My principal, T.M., has visited our classroom daily and can't boast about my babies enough.

We have been learning about Martin Luther King, as I mentioned yesterday. It has been so amazing. To hear my children talking about the civil rights is so powerful. I am hoping to ingrain in their heads that they are world changers--they have the power to be the change they wish to see in the world. Anyway, my babies thought it would be cool to act our MLK's life. I had planned something on a smaller scale anyway so I thought the idea was wonderful. So, on Parent's Night we plan on performing a Martin Luther King/Civil Rights play that highlights major events of the Civil Rights including the influence of MLK's family, the death of Emmet Till, the story of Ruby Bridges, the courage of Rosa Parks, the March on Washington, the Freedom Writers, the death and funeral of MLK and finally, a special I Have a Dream speech written by our class.

Here are the words:

We Have a Dream

We have a dream that one day, all people in South Dakota, Lakota and not, will be treated with respect and equality.

We have a dream that one day, all of us will grow up in a country where we are judged not by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character.

We have a dream that one day all of us will graduate from high school and go onto college to lead good lives.

We have a dream that one day we will transform bad to good, wrong to right and we will be able to change the world.

We have dreams.

I think I should also mention, especially for the sake of my parents, that I am doing very well now. I managed to find the hide-a-key under my truck and the housing manger gave me a key. My friend, R, who is a janitor, slipped me his copy of my room key. The whole staff is so supportive, giving advice and looking for those keys. I even had my principal in my class, requesting that my babies search high and low to help me find them. She also wanted to give me her cell phone info so that I could contact her if I ever needed anything. I truly am blessed!

P.S. Mommy and Daddy--sorry for worrying you! You know your girl can deal--don't worry! I am doing MUCH better now and I even cooked dinner tonight!
