I have such mixed feelings today, but I think it is important to write down my thoughts as it is indeed a historic day.
Yesterday my babies and I celebrated Dr. King's birthday. It was an emotional day for me, for a lot of reason. In part, when I looked into the faces of my children, I realized that his dream had not yet been realized. My children were still judged by their culture or the color of their skin rather than by their character. Even in places as close as Rapid, the Lakota are often treated with disdain and mistrust.
But today, I celebrated again with my children. Today we celebrated a monumental moment in our nation—a moment that in part embodies Dr. King's message. To see a person of color be elected to highest office in our country, if not the world, was very moving for me. However, another part of me felt as if some people had twisted Dr. King's message. You see, Dr. King dreamt that one day we would judge people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. This, I feel, is why I have so many mixed emotions about Barack Obama.
I am not going to sit here and judge the character of a man I have never met. However, I rebuke some Christitans for the way they have elevated President Obama to nearly the level of Jesus Christ. Barack Obama is not the giver of hope. Can God use Him? Yes. Will He? I pray that this is so. But please do not confuse Him with Jesus. The near God-like worship of President Obama disturbs me.
What further disturbs is how so many people have found it so convenient to forget that President Obama is 100% pro-choice. In fact, according to the abortion lobbyist group Pro-Choice for America, Obama received a 100% rating in 2005, 2006, and 2007 for abortion issues. That means that he is not only pro-choice but he is not even moderately pro-choice. Furthermore, in one interview, President Obama defended his opposition of a ban on partial-birth abortions. Though he wasn't in Congress at the time it voted on the ban, he said he would have supported it had it contained a health exception. However, doctors and medical groups readily acknowledge that the three-day-long abortion procedure -- involving the killing of an unborn baby halfway through the birthing process - never helps women medically. For those of you who don't know what partial-birth abortion is. Look it up. It's disgusting. From 1973-2000, 39 million children have been aborted—that is far larger number than the death toll from every major war we have fought in the last century—combined!
I have never sought to make my blog a place of division, but unity. But if over a million teenagers were shot dead every year, and our president was supporting it, you had better believe I would have something to say about it. Well, I have something to say about this: while focuses on the good in an individual and the hope that he may inspire, we cannot forget the deeds of darkness that are being perpetuated.
This is not a critique of Barack Obama. Instead, it is a plea to believers. I ask that you would temper your praise and remember that those voices of children that have been silenced.

P.S. I promise that tomorrow's entry will be about the happenings of Room 170.
P.P.S. I know that there are other issues that are so very important. However, that doesn't make this issue less important.

I tried to call you tonight, but couldn't get a hold of you. I ended up leaving a message, just wishing you a happy birthday and letting you know that I was thinking about you and praying for you, especially today. :-)
(And the only reason that I tell you that again here is that it occurred to me later that there is a fairly good possibility that once again, you currently have no idea where your phone even is! haha, jk!!)
Anyway, I love keeping up with you via your thought-provoking blogs, and want you to know that I'm here, and I look up to you, and I'm cheering you on. :-) I hope you had a wonderful birthday!
